Company Description

Odds and Sods was started by Royston Gates 12 years ago, buying and selling used furniture from premises on Springfield Road, Chelmsford.

Although the business was an immediate success it was limited in scope, so Roy teamed up with web consultant David Fletcher to develop the web site www.oddsandsods.net. The web site enabled the business to expand into e-commerce, listing every item of stock along with photographs, descriptions, and the option to purchase items directly using Paypal online payments.

Since the launch of www.oddsandsods.net the business has expanded twice and a substantial amount of time and money has been invested into the company. In addition to our original shop in Springfield Road and our web site we now have a 3000 sq ft warehouse at Reeds Farm, Roxwell Road, and more recently we have developed a computerised system for bulk listing of furniture, antiques and collectibles on eBay auctions and in our own eBay shop.

We currently have five staff members and over 2000 items listed online and we receive over a million hits a year to our website. The next phase of our business plan concentrates on the recycling aspect of our work, as we add to our target of recycling all packaging, metal, wood and glass, and ensuring that as little goes to landfill as is possible.

Job Description

Our Springfield Road Chelmsford store currently requires a SHOP ASSISTANT. Duties will include:

• Working at the shop up to five days per week (with Sunday and one weekday off), serving customers face to face and on the phone. This requires a patient friendly manner, and collection of all relevant details, which need to be logged on our internal messaging system.
  
• New items of stock, and smaller collectible items, are to be photographed, measured, researched, then listed on our web site. Full training will be provided, though basic computer and Internet knowledge, good spelling, a methodical approach and attention to detail is required. For researching and listing collectibles, a keen interest in the antiques and collectibles market in general is an asset, as is any previous experience using EBay.
  
• Moving furniture carefully in and out of stock as items sell, and loading and assisting in the daily packing and unpacking of the shop. Physical fitness and strength is required.
  
• Keeping the shop tidy. With all the coming and going of stock the shop is in constant need of tidying and cleaning, making sure price tickets are on, polishing items of furniture etc.
  
• The ability to assemble large items of furniture and carry out light repairs and improvements where required, being a bit handy with woodwork and staining, polishing etc is an advantage.
  
• House clearances, deliveries and collections to and from customers' houses, and warehouse work may be occasionally required, usually only to cover staff holidays. We train each of our staff in a variety of skills and always try to mix the workload each week so that the job remains interesting - and because we sell pretty much anything and everything, there is always something new to learn!
